We publish a fair amount of drainage advice on this site. This page explains the limits of that information and what you should not rely on it for.

The articles, guides, cost ranges and FAQs on this website are general information about drainage in Auckland. They are written to help you understand what might be happening and what your options are. They are not a substitute for an inspection of your actual drain by a licensed drainlayer.
Every drainage system is different. Pipe material, age, depth, fall, layout, tree cover and ground conditions all change what the right answer is. Do not make a decision to dig, repair, or leave a problem alone based only on what you read here.
Where we publish price ranges, they are indicative ranges based on typical Auckland jobs at the time of writing. They are not quotes and not offers. Actual price depends on access, depth, pipe condition, the equipment needed, the time required, and where the property is. The only price you can rely on is a written quote issued for your job after an inspection.
Some of our content describes checks you can safely do yourself, such as lifting a gully grate or running a tap to see which fixtures are affected. Attempting drainage work beyond simple checks carries real risks: wastewater is a biological hazard, drain rods and pressurised equipment can injure, confined spaces can be fatal, and excavation can strike live services.
Certain sanitary drainage work is also restricted work under the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act 2006 and must be done or supervised by a licensed person. We accept no responsibility for loss, damage or injury resulting from anyone attempting work described on this site. If in doubt, call someone licensed.
Our content explains, in general terms, where private drainage responsibility usually ends and where the public network begins in Auckland. The precise boundary for your property depends on your connection, your title, and the records held by Watercare and Auckland Council. Always confirm with them before assuming a pipe is or is not yours.
We link to third-party websites, including government agencies and regulators, because we think they are useful and authoritative. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, accuracy or availability. A link is not an endorsement of anything else on that site.
We try to keep this site accurate and up to date, and we date our articles so you can see how current they are. Regulations, network responsibilities and costs change. We make no warranty that everything here is complete, current or error-free at the moment you read it. If you spot something wrong, please tell us and we will correct it.
Descriptions of services and service areas on this site are indications of what we generally offer, not a guarantee that a particular service is available at a particular property on a particular day. Emergency response times depend on demand, traffic and location.
To the extent permitted by law, we exclude liability for any loss arising from reliance on information published on this website. This does not affect your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or the Fair Trading Act 1986 in relation to services we actually supply to you — those are covered in our Terms & Conditions.
Call us and describe what the drain is doing. If it is not something we can help with, we will tell you who can.
