Central Auckland · 24/7 callout
Drain clearing, camera surveys and repairs across Ponsonby — and an honest answer about whether the blockage is even yours to pay for.
Blocked Drains Auckland provides drain unblocking, CCTV drain surveys, hydro-jetting, tree root removal and drain repair throughout Ponsonby, Central Auckland. Auckland's oldest residential stock — villas from the 1880s through the 1910s. Drainage here is typically glazed earthenware laid in short jointed lengths, much of it original. Emergency callout operates 24 hours, 7 days, and we give you a price before work starts.
Ponsonby has some of the oldest drainage still in service anywhere in Auckland, and it produces a very consistent picture on camera: a sound earthenware barrel, remarkably intact after a century, with mortar joints that have long since given up. Add a dense mature street canopy and narrow sections where every drain runs close to something with roots, and root intrusion at the joints is close to the default finding here.
Typical pipe: Glazed earthenware laid in short jointed lengths, much of it original.
Local conditions
The pipe itself is often in good order. The mortar seals between each 600mm length are not, and that is where everything gets in.
Narrow sections and established street trees mean almost every lateral runs within reach of significant root systems — frequently from a neighbour's tree or the berm.
Ponsonby has been renovated more than almost any Auckland suburb. Old alterations leave surprises: abandoned branches, mixed materials, building debris, and stormwater cross-connected into wastewater.
Everything below is available across the Central Auckland area, from a single blocked gully through to a relined lateral.
Before you pay anyone
It is worth thirty seconds, because it decides who pays. Everything on your side of the point of supply — internal plumbing, the gully trap outside, and the private lateral out to the connection — is the property owner’s. The public wastewater main is Watercare’s, and they clear blockages on it at no cost to you.
If wastewater is surfacing in the street, or neighbouring Ponsonby properties have the same problem on the same day, ring Watercare on (09) 442 2222, option 1, before you call a plumber. If only your property is affected, it is almost certainly the private lateral — and that is us.
Very often, yes — it is close to the ideal application. The classic Ponsonby finding is a structurally sound earthenware barrel with failed joints, which is exactly what a cured-in-place liner is for. The liner seals every joint along the relined section at once, without excavating a narrow site where access is difficult and reinstatement is expensive.
Usually because a slow process has crossed a threshold. Mortar joints degrade gradually, ground movement opens them a fraction at a time, and roots thicken season by season. Nothing changed suddenly; the drain simply reached the point where the restriction finally caught something.

Non-urgent work is usually within 1–2 working days. For an active overflow we aim to attend the same day, and our emergency callout runs 24 hours, 7 days including public holidays. Response time depends on where you are and how many jobs are already running — we will give you an honest window.
You get a price before any work starts, not an invoice afterwards. Call and describe the symptoms and we will give you a realistic range over the phone; the firm price is confirmed on site once we can see the access and the drain. See our Auckland cost guide for the ranges.
Tell us what it is doing and we will tell you what it probably is, what it takes to fix, and what that should cost.
