
Clear it, then stop it coming back
Cutting roots out of a drain is the easy half. Finding the joint they came in through is what stops you doing it again in eighteen months.
Tree root removal clears root growth from inside a drain using mechanical cutting heads or high-pressure jetting with a root nozzle, restoring flow to the line. Roots almost never break sound sealed pipe — they grow towards moisture already escaping from a failed joint or an existing crack, then thicken inside the pipe and trap debris. Because of that, cutting alone is a temporary measure: roots regrow through the same entry point, typically within one to three years, unless that defect is sealed or replaced.
There is a persistent belief that tree roots seek out drains and crush them. They do not. Roots grow where there is water and oxygen, and a sound, sealed pipe offers neither — the water is on the inside and the wall is continuous.
What actually happens is the reverse. A joint opens slightly through ground movement, or a hairline crack develops in ageing pipe, and a small amount of moisture and water vapour escapes into the surrounding soil. Roots in that soil respond to it and grow towards the source. A fine root finds the gap, enters, and discovers a permanently wet, nutrient-rich environment. It thickens. More follow. Within a few seasons there is a root mass hanging inside the pipe like a net, catching paper, fat and solids — and the drain blocks.
This matters practically, because it means the roots are a symptom. The defect came first. Any approach that only removes roots is treating the consequence.
A pattern we see constantly in Auckland: the drain is fine all summer, then blocks reliably in the wet months. Two things drive it. Root growth responds to seasonal moisture, and Auckland's clay soils shrink through a dry summer and swell again when the rain returns — flexing jointed pipe and opening gaps that had partly closed. If your drain has a seasonal rhythm, that is a strong signal of root intrusion at a moving joint.
We can clear the roots and get your drain running properly, usually in a single visit. What we cannot do is guarantee they will not return, because the pathway is still there. What we can do is put a camera down, show you exactly where they are entering, and give you a real choice: clear it periodically as a maintenance cost, or seal the entry point and stop the cycle. Both are legitimate decisions. A short section of relining on an otherwise sound line is often surprisingly affordable compared with several more years of callouts.
When it applies
Root intrusion has a distinctive pattern. If several of these describe your drain, roots are the likely cause.
Roots enter at a specific defect, so the blockage forms in the same place each time. A random blockage moves around; a root blockage does not.
Worse in autumn and winter, better in summer. Growth cycles and soil movement both track moisture.
Drainage slows over weeks or months as the root mass thickens, then blocks completely when something finally catches on it.
Liquidambar, plane, willow, poplar, and large natives are all vigorous water-seekers, and the drain does not have to run directly under the tree.
Pre-1980 earthenware and concrete pipe laid in short jointed lengths gives roots a joint every 600mm or so to work on. Modern uPVC with rubber-ring seals rarely has this problem.
The most telling sign of all. A blockage that returns within a year or two of being cleared has a physical cause, and roots are the most common one in Auckland.
How it runs
Symptom pattern points the way, but a camera confirms it — and shows how much root there is and how far along the line.
A mechanical cutting head or a jetting unit with a root nozzle removes the growth and takes the pipe back to its full bore, flushing the debris out of the line.
This is the part that gets skipped elsewhere. With the line clear, the camera shows the actual defect — the open joint, the crack — and the sonde marks its position and depth on the surface.
Periodic maintenance clearing, or sealing the entry point by relining or replacing that section. We will tell you what we would do, and what it costs, and leave the decision with you.

If you are clearing the same drain every eighteen months, add up what that has cost over the last six years and compare it with sealing the entry point once. For a lot of Auckland properties the repair has already paid for itself. For others — an elderly owner planning to sell, a short remaining tenancy, a minor intrusion that has never actually blocked — periodic clearing is genuinely the better call. Auckland is close to ideal conditions for root intrusion: a mild wet climate, a lot of ageing jointed drainage, and a mature urban tree canopy planted through exactly the suburbs where the oldest pipe is.
The heaviest root work we do is through the older central suburbs — Ponsonby, Mt Eden, Epsom, Remuera, Onehunga and Orakei — where villas and bungalows sit on earthenware laterals under streets lined with mature liquidambar and plane trees. The eastern bays including Saint Heliers and Mission Bay show the same pattern, as do the older parts of Takapuna and Glenfield.
Out west through Henderson, Massey and New Lynn, and south through Papakura and Pukekohe, larger sections and heavier clay bring a slightly different version of the same problem: more ground movement, more displaced joints, and roots exploiting the gaps that movement creates.
Removing a tree does not repair a drain. The defect the roots came through is still there, and if the tree is not yours, or is protected, removal may not be available to you in any case. Auckland Council administers tree protection rules under the Unitary Plan and some trees are scheduled or otherwise protected, so it is worth checking with the Council before making plans. In most cases sealing the pipe is faster, cheaper and more certain than dealing with the tree — and it keeps the tree, which for a mature street specimen is generally the better outcome anyway.
Not by itself. The roots got in through an existing defect, and that defect is still there after the tree goes. Other roots — from neighbouring trees, hedges or even shrubs — can find the same gap. Sealing the entry point addresses the actual cause, and it does not require removing a mature tree that may well be protected.
Typically one to three years after cutting, depending on the species, how close it is, and the size of the opening. A large opening near a vigorous tree can re-block inside a year. A fine intrusion at a tight joint might go several years.
Root-inhibiting foaming treatments exist and can slow regrowth in the pipe. They are a maintenance measure, not a repair — they do not seal the defect, and they need repeating. We would rather you understood that before paying for a treatment that is sold in some quarters as a permanent fix.
The drain is still the property owner's responsibility if it is on your side of the point of supply, regardless of whose tree the roots came from. That feels unfair and it is nonetheless how it works. What matters practically is that the pipe defect is what lets roots in, and that is on your line.
Often, yes — it is close to the ideal application. A liner seals the joints and cracks along the relined section, removing the pathway entirely. Where the pipe is otherwise sound and it is the seals that have failed, which is the classic older-Auckland pattern, a short relined section can resolve a decade of recurring blockages. The pattern is distinctive: same location every time, seasonal, gradual slowing then sudden blockage, and an older jointed drain with mature trees nearby. A CCTV survey confirms it definitively and shows you the entry point.
