Massey was built out through the 1970s and 1980s on generous sections, and that generosity defines its drainage. Private laterals run a long way from house to boundary, giving a fault plenty of room to develop unnoticed, and forty years of garden planting has grown up along the whole length of them. Combined with West Auckland's active clay, the usual findings are displaced joints partway along the run and roots exploiting them.
The thing that most distinguishes Massey from a compact inner suburb is simply distance. A Massey lateral might run twenty-five or thirty metres from the gully trap to the boundary connection, under lawn, garden and often a driveway. That means more joints, more opportunity for the ground to move it, and a fault that can sit a very long way from where the symptoms appear.
It also means locating properly is worth real money here. Guessing from symptoms on a thirty-metre run is how people end up with a trench across the lawn. A camera with a sonde in the head, and a locator marking the position and depth on the surface, turns that into a targeted two-metre excavation.
Massey's era of construction caught the transition to plastic drainage, and some early uPVC was poorly bedded when it went in. Where the surrounding material did not properly support the pipe, decades of load have deformed it — it shows up on camera as an oval rather than a circle. It is not dramatic, but a deformed section carries less, catches more, and is a poor candidate for relining.
Generous sections get planted. Four decades on, Massey properties frequently have mature trees and established hedging directly over the line of the lateral, and West Auckland's moving clay has given those roots plenty of openings to find.

Because sections here are large and as-built plans are often long gone, tracing where the drain actually runs is a routine part of the job rather than an extra. Not necessarily. There is more pipe, so locating the fault matters more — but the offsetting factor is that a fault under lawn is far cheaper to excavate and reinstate than the same fault under a concrete driveway. Depth and what sits on top drive repair cost considerably more than distance from the house does.
Yes, and on Massey sections we do it often. A camera with a sonde transmitter in the head, plus a surface locator, lets us trace the route and mark it above ground with depths. On a large section with no as-built drawings that is frequently the more valuable half of the visit — particularly before landscaping or building work.
It is pipe that has gone out of round under load, usually because it was not properly bedded when installed. Early uPVC from the 1970s and 80s is the common culprit. A mildly deformed section may simply be monitored; a badly deformed one carries less and catches debris, and because relining needs a reasonably round host pipe, it generally has to be excavated and replaced rather than lined.
It is one of the better small investments available. Building over a drain makes any future repair dramatically more expensive, and striking one during excavation turns a straightforward job into an emergency. Having the route and depth marked first costs a fraction of that.
