Tree Roots in Auckland Drains
Roots don't break sound pipe — they find water already escaping. Why that distinction changes everything about how you fix it.
Diagnosis
A CCTV drain survey sends a waterproof camera along the inside of a drain on a flexible rod or a motorised crawler, recording the pipe's condition while measuring distance travelled. It identifies root intrusion, cracks, displaced joints, dips, collapses, build-up and incorrect connections, and a sonde transmitter in the camera head allows any fault to be located and depth-marked from the surface. It is the only way to establish the cause of a recurring blockage without excavating, and it is what any credible drain repair quote should be based on.
It is less dramatic than it sounds. The camera goes in through an existing access point — usually the outside gully trap or an inspection chamber. For domestic laterals it is a camera head on a flexible push rod; for larger diameters, a motorised crawler unit that drives itself along.
As the camera travels, distance is measured continuously, so every observation has a position: root intrusion at 8.4 metres, not roots somewhere in the line. That precision is the whole point.
When something needs pinpointing, a sonde in the camera head transmits a signal that a locator picks up from above ground. The operator walks the surface, finds the peak signal, and marks the spot — along with the depth. That is what makes a targeted repair possible instead of exploratory digging, and it is the difference between a two-metre excavation and a trench across your lawn.
A camera cannot see through a solid blockage or a pipe full of standing wastewater. If the line is blocked, it normally has to be cleared before it can be usefully surveyed — often in the same visit, but it is separate work and should be priced as such.
Not always — and anyone selling you one for a first-time blockage with no history is overselling.
Worth it:
Probably not worth it: a single blockage at a property with no history, cleared easily, with an obvious cause — a child's toy, a first-ever fat blockage. Clear it and see whether it recurs.
You do not need to be an expert, but a few things help you follow along and ask better questions.
Above all, ask the question that matters: does this actually need fixing, and if so, when? Not every defect found on camera is urgent. A minor root at one joint on a drain that has never blocked is worth monitoring, not excavating. A good operator will tell you that unprompted.
If you are a landlord justifying a repair to an owner, a buyer deciding whether to proceed, or someone getting a second opinion, the footage is the evidence. It is the most valuable thing you take away from the visit.
A straightforward domestic lateral is usually under an hour once the line is clear and accessible. A property with multiple branches, several access points and locating work takes longer.
It helps considerably. The most valuable part is watching the screen while someone explains what you are looking at. If you cannot be there, ask for the footage and a walkthrough by phone.
Not meaningfully. The camera cannot see through a solid obstruction. The blockage has to be cleared first, which is usually done in the same visit.
That is one of its main purposes. Relining needs a structurally continuous, reasonably round pipe. Collapses, severe crushing and significant back-falls need excavation. The footage is what decides.
The terms are used interchangeably in New Zealand. Both mean a camera inspection of the inside of the drain. What matters is not the label but whether you get the footage, the distances, and located faults.
